As the Tax Director for CarVal, this position is responsible for developing and overseeing CarVal's global tax function including recommending solutions for products and structures as well as overseeing CarVal's tax planning and compliance staff.  This position will report to CarVal's CFO.
 
Principal Accountabilities:
 
Global tax review and structuring for investments, funds and management company entities

  • Includes analyzing complex multi-jurisdictional tax issues.
  • Will involve interacting with portfolio managers, operational leaders and senior management within CarVal as well as coordination with global external advisors. 

Oversee global tax compliance

  • Assure accurate and timely global tax filings for investment, fund, and management entities, including preparation and delivery of investor K-1s
  • Regular internal reviews of fund structures and country specific issues
  • Coordination of global tax audits
  • Resolution of audit issues

 Manage global tax advisor relationships 


Skills:
Required:

  • Graduate degree in law (JD, LLM).
  • Minimum of 8+ years U.S. tax experience with an emphasis on the alternative investment industry.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of international tax experience.
  • Financial product/markets experience.
  • Experience with U.S. tax withholding and reporting, (W-8/W-9 rules and reporting).
  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. foreign tax credits rules or foreign tax withholding.
  • Experience in investor or partnership accounting or 1065/K-1 partnership tax returns.
  • Proven track record of managing complex cross-border assignments within the tax department of a multinational law firm, Big Four accounting firm or a leading financial services firm.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage significant, complex projects, multiple priorities and multiple client relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and act independently - takes initiative when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a complex work environment.
  • Strong communication and people skills proven with all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and engage a team of experienced tax professionals.
  • Successful passage of regulatory screening, including political contribution screening.

Preferred:

  • CPA
  • Graduate degree in tax (MBT)
