Position Purpose:(1) Assist alfalfa breeder to implement the non-dormant breeding, biotech and molecular breeding programs in California. Responsibilities include data collection, entry and analysis; plant sampling, crossing and propagation; greenhouse management; disease screening; and compliance reporting. (2) Serve as primary support in design, prototype development, testing, maintenance and rebuild of central database for alfalfa and silage corn.
Required (Basic) Experience & Education:Bachelor's or Master's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Breeding or related field; practical experience in an operational alfalfa breeding program; specialized experience in data management and analysis. Minimum two years of research experience; applied experience in agronomy, small-plot field research and/or greenhouse management.
Required Competencies & Other Skills:Critical thinking; ability to work independently and efficiently; initiative; effective communication and management skills with all levels of research staff; advanced proficiency in Excel, Access and PRISM, Agrobase or similar database software. Attention to detail; accurate and detailed record-keeping and reporting; excellent verbal, written, communication and interpersonal skills; planning, organization and time management skills; leadership potential.
Preferred Experience & Education:Three to five years of experience in alfalfa breeding with practical skills in field data collection, greenhouse management, pollination and disease screening, preferably in the seed industry; experience in forage yield testing and local agronomic practices is strongly preferred.
Preferred Competencies & Other Skills:Database development, computer programming or demonstrated aptitude and willingness to learn in these areas. Proficiency in speaking Spanish would be helpful.
Percentage of Travel:15%
