Forage Management Intern - TX/OK/KS

Position Purpose:This position will be provided training and direction to complete a successful internship. Upon completing this internship, the intern will develop a presentation and communicate to Land O'Lakes-CROPLAN GENETICS sales and product management the data collected through this internship experience. The goal of this internship is to enhance and support sales of alfalfa and corn silage seed, and forage innoculant/preservative business within CROPLAN GENETICS. Intern will support cooperative sales strategy and support regional marketing opportunity and strategies. Intern will interact with seed/feed seller to improve producer's profitability. Applicants should possess a farm/agriculture background with preference to crop production and general aptitude of animal agriculture. Intern will be required to sign a confidentially agreement prior to employment. Pre-employment drug test and background check required.

Hours and Schedule:
This is a full-time intern position from May - Mid-August. A minimum of 40 hours per week.

Specific Responsibilities:
The intern will assist and interact with Winfield Solutions personnel with respect to planting, crop management, and harvesting of uniform forages for use with dairy production. This position will include working with large dairy producers to scout fields, make crop management recommendations, monitor crop progress to insure silage harvest at optimum timing, recommending use of silage inoculants or preservatives to optimize forage quality, and tracking crop for proper harvesting and storage procedures. These activities will tie in with a Forage Management Plan process for producing quality dairy forages. Additional work with large dairies may include collecting silage and grain samples from existing on-farm feedstock piles in conjunction with implementation of the Calibrate(tm) dairy ration management program.

This position will also include participation at Answer Plot locations to assist in training sellers, conduct direct marketing activity, and assist in sales activity to dairy and forage producers. Activities will include helping organize educational events for seed/feed sellers, assisting in organizing one or more forage specific events for 25+ large dairy producers, and follow-up with key prospects who have attended recent Answer Plot Events, conferences or meetings. Overall, learn and gain understanding of the benefits of specific Winfield Solutions products in coordination with feeding programs for lactating dairy cows or other ruminants. Additional job duties and responsibilities will be outlined by the primary supervisor and performance results reviewed mid-term during the internship.

Required (Basic) Experience & Education:This position is for someone who is attending college and planning to pursue an agricultural career after graduation.

Required Competencies & Other Skills:Candidates should have strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to think creatively and handle multiple projects; and desire to learn and gain experience. Candidates should be able to function with minimum of supervision and good work ethic and be able to travel. The position may require working outside with exposure to dust, plant pollen, cool/hot temperatures, walking fields and digging up plants.
