Cargill Canola Oils develops, produces and markets high-performance canola oils. Our business is backed by an intellectual property position in the genetic engineering of canola, and by a leading team of molecular biologists specializing in oil modification. 

 

We develop proprietary planting seeds, contract with growers in Canada and crush and refine canola into premium oils sold to food processors and the food service industry, as well as to other organizations for inedible uses. Limited amounts of high oleic sunflower oil are also produced by our Specialty Canola Oils group. 

 

We support canola farmers not only by providing premier hybrid seeds that generate high yields, but also by offering unique financial tools that help minimize their risk and increase their profits. 

 

The Greenhouse Team Supervisor contributes value to Cargill and the Specialty Canola oils team by providing management of the greenhouse facilities and staff  to meet the genetic and breeding programs requirements. The supervisor is responsible for managing staff for  high quality plant care, seed production, and plant growth environment testing to meet project objectives. Responsibilities include assurance of greenhouse plant productivity and genetic purity by leveraging the expertise of the team.  The candidate will effectively manage onsite pest management practices for disease and insect control.  This position will provide leadership, development, and direction for the plant management team. They will be responsible for the communicating with the Trait & Breeding functions to develop and manage workplans and budgets for the plant growth operations. The candidate will lead and provide an environment of continuous optimization, efficiency increase and cost reduction. The Greenhouse Team Supervisor actively participates as part of a cross functional team and is responsible for formal representation of the plant management team with other functional groups within the Trait and Breeding development group at various global locations. This position manages all greenhouse activities and contributes to hybrid canola development by:

  • Developing and coaching plant management team members to ensure  a culture of  professional growth and engagement
  • Assuring consistency  and quality of the greenhouse cycles through effective pest management practices
  • Developing and managing  the functional budget while coordinating project goals with resources needed for on time completion
  • Fostering a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous quality improvement
  • Coordinating management of germplasm inventory and storage
  • Ensuring compliance with Quality Assurance, Stewardship and Regulatory policies to assure genetic purity

Principal Accountabilities:

40%  Leadership and professional growth of the plant management team by providing direction, defined expectations, best practices for operational success, and development opportunities for team.  20%  Development and execution of the plant management work plans to meet the project requirements for trait discovery, trait development, germplasm screening and plant breeding functional goals,  20%  Responsible for workforce planning, employee development, budget development and management and safety for  the plant management team 10%  Lead a culture of quality assurance, process management and innovation within the plant management team 10%  Responsible for implementation of stewardship and regulatory policies in on-site plant and seed handling activities 

 



Skills:

Required:  

  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or related science with 2+ years of experience in greenhouse/nursery management and demonstrated people management
  • Demonstrated experience in integrated pest management and pesticide application
  • Knowledge and experience in plant management in artificial/controlled growth environments
  • Demonstrated leadership and people development
  • Ability to work across multiple plant science disciplines
  • Ability to develop and adhere to budgets and project plans
  • Good knowledge with Microsoft Applications to manage spreadsheets, word-processing and presentations
  • Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills across functional teams 

Desired

  • MS degree in Plant Science (Horticulture or Agronomy) with 2+ experience in greenhouse management.
  • Proven track record of greenhouse improvement Experience in hybrid development in an applied plant breeding program
  • Experience in operation of a research plant production facility
  • Knowledge of applied molecular breeding and genetics
  • Working with breeding programs in greenhouse seed production and quality management
  • Demonstrated supervisory capabilities in a cross functional environment
  • Experience with green house automation or other technical improvements
  • Proven track record of improvement in greenhouse management practices in pest/disease management, improved plant health, and maximized seed production with stable environment for robust phenotypic selection
  • Basic understanding of molecular biology, genetics and plant breeding
  • Familiar with requirements for management and segregation of genetically modified plant material
