Position Title: Next Generation Sequence Analyst

Role Purpose/Accountabilities:

- Partner with bench scientists and plant breeders to design and execute state-of-the-art experiments that combine their knowledge of plant biology with the capabilities of next generation sequencing to support lead generation, mode of action research, biomarker discovery and germplasm development
- Provide expert analysis of next generation sequencing data in a variety of areas, such as: genome assembly, transcriptome analysis, genomic structural variation, methylation analysis, small RNA detection, genetic variation, etc.
- Propose and execute new projects and infrastructure improvements that take advantage of the power of next generation sequencing to answer scientific questions
- Determine the optimal analytical tools and databases required to achieve scientific objectives
- Explain complex scientific concepts and results to audiences not closely connected with the field

Accountabilities:
- Identify and implement cutting edge analytical methods and algorithms from a variety of sources to deliver high quality analysis results for Syngenta scientists across the globe
- Modify existing methods or develop new ones, when necessary, to address scientific questions and support project objectives
- Provide quick, tactical solutions to scientists by writing simple computer programs or scripts
- Support multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results in a timely manner
- Develop best practices for next generation sequencing analysis, document them, and teach others how to execute them
- Contribute to next generation sequencing data analysis infrastructure development and operation


Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Critical knowledge:
- PhD or equivalent experience in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics or related biological field
- Knowledge of the challenges and breadth of analysis in the emerging field of next generation sequencing
- Knowledge of commercial and publicly available bioinformatics tools and data sets
- Familiarity with the Linux and/or Unix computing environments required and previous experience implementing processes in a grid environment such as Sun Grid Engine strongly desired
- Proficiency in Perl or other programming or scripting language required
- Fluency in a statistical programming language such as R or SAS is desired
- Knowledge of SQL query language is desired

Critical experience:
- Three to five years experience (could be postdoctoral) performing computational analysis in a life sciences setting
- Experience working effectively in multi-disciplinary teams
- Working knowledge of information systems and the ability to communicate effectively with IS professionals
- Previous work experience in a biological laboratory, particularly if related to plant biology, would be a plus
- Experience instructing scientists on the use of computational biology tools would be a plus
