Cargill AgHorizons is the division of the company dedicated to creating value for agricultural producers, specifically grain and oilseed growers in the Prairies and Ontario.  This division leads the industry in providing innovations in the areas of grain origination, agronomic and grain marketing consulting, and crop input supplies. Professionally trained customer focus teams work one-on-one with their producer customers, building long-term relationships-striving to understand their farming business and providing distinctive solutions, matched to their unique needs.
Reporting to the Canola Origination Centre Manager, the Canola Origination Representative is responsible for originating generic canola directly from farm customers within a targeted geography for delivery to the Cargill crushing plant in Clavet.  In this position, you will work alongside other canola origination representatives as part of a Canola Origination Team. You will be responsible for actively calling and fielding calls from existing and prospect customers for the purpose of purchasing their generic canola seed production in a manner that complements Cargill's existing customer approach.
Principal Accountabilities:
70% - Grain Contracting - Actively call and field calls from customers in order to purchase their generic canola seed production.  This includes uncovering customer needs and positioning Cargill's grain contracting tools such as Deferred Delivery, Fixed Basis and Grain Pricing Orders as well as other more advanced risk management tools and entering these contracts into the contract management systems.
10% - Customer Management and Customer Prospecting - Build the customer base for generic canola by actively contacting current and prospective canola customers in their geography.   You will use the customer database to gather information and opportunities with existing and prospect customers and will also refer customers to Cargill sales staff regarding potential business opportunities in other grain or crop input product lines.
10% - Logistics & Settlement - Work with the Clavet logistics team to ensure timely execution and performance against contracts as well as following up on contract management and issuing payment against contracts upon delivery.
5% - Measurement & Performance Tracking - As part of the Canola Origination Center Team, you will be responsible for measuring individual and team performance through the creation and implementation of a balanced scorecard process.
5% - Origination Strategy & Planning - You will be responsible for understanding the canola market within their origination territory.  This includes estimating crop production and communicating to the Oilseed Merchandising Team.  You will also be responsible for knowing the market situation including available supply, farmer selling intentions, competitive situations, etc., and will participate in developing origination strategies and tactics with the Canola Origination Center Team and the Oilseed Merchandising Team.


  • Curious and willing to explore and gather information in order to understand customer situation and reduce market uncertainty.

  • Strong listening and verbal communication skills in order to build rapport over the telephone 
  • Sales and Customer Relationship Management skills with ability to create solutions and confidence to ask for the order
  • Highly self motivated with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work with multiple databases and contract management systems.
  • Knowledge of canola markets and understanding of customer selling behavior.
  • Knowledge of grain contracting tools.
  • Related post secondary education or training.
