Role Purpose/Accountabilities:
Global responsibility for
- Leading the formulation, articulation, and coordination of the innovation, investment and incentive models to enable the realization of the R&D strategy and associated change initiatives. Scouting, identifying, accessing and evaluating external technology opportunities for Seeds Biotech to build a sustainable R&D pipeline across crops.
- Managing open source innovation and source processes and driving the culture across the global R&D organization.
- Promoting and managing a sustainable internal new invention disclosure process in Seeds Biotech (in partnership with LIPL and Biotech researchers and project leaders).
- Interfacing with global portfolio leaders to continually screen, shape and refine programs within the portfolio to establish a pipeline of growth platforms aligned with portfolio requirements and business strategies.

- Establish a global trait and technology scouting function with staff and networks located in the regions.
- Actively network externally to identify new technology opportunities with potential to advance Syngenta’s R&D strategies.
- Build a robust organization responsible for evaluating all external and internal trait and technology opportunities for business value, technical value and, with LIPL, FTO.
- Ensure timely responses are made to third parties and internal inventors when evaluating opportunities.
- Partner and leverage Syngenta Ventures and M&A when appropriate.
- Build a dedicated team and networks to drive an open innovation and source innovation culture in to all of R&D. With partners such as innovation intermediaries, provide tools, training and support for R&D staff to post challenges and administer solutions.
- Partner with research program managers to be informed of the traits and technologies required by the SYT portfolio.
- Lead a team which fosters scientific curiosity, partnership, and transformative results.
- Influence research agenda across long term research and portfolio objectives.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Critical knowledge:
- PhD in plant genetics or related field and 15+ years experience in R&D
- Understanding of new emerging technologies and trends
- Understanding the role of LIPL in developing alliances with external parties
- Ability to value technology opportunities; MBA preferred
- Budget construction and management
- Passion for problem solving and keen interest in the problems that confront the Ag industry
- Robust and broad consulting skills and general business aptitude
- Deliverable-oriented work style, comfortable with demanding deadlines and exacting customers
- Demonstrated ability to self-direct and flex between a variety of approaches, and deal with ambiguity
- Demonstrated ability to earn the trust and respect of contacts at all levels, both within the company (SVPs to managers in pivotal roles) and outside (external experts and service providers)
- General business awareness of, strategy
