Role Purpose/Accountabilities:
Execute outlined growing procedures and process for Syngenta asters and chrysanthemums to deliver quality cuttings that meet customer requirements on a consistent basis.

Accountabilities:

- Visually inspect assigned growing area minimum one time per week. Area assignment is usually 5 to 15 acres.
- Monitor water and fertility needs of mum and aster crop for all stages of crop from unrooted cuttings to mature stock plants.
- Monitor soil and fertilizer E.C. conditions and adjust based on established criteria and computer control systems.
- Monitor and diagnosis crop for insect and disease issues. Respond in compliance with IPM and WPS practices.
- Implement weekly plant growth regulator crop model, insect and disease control strategies and weed control.
- Maintain proper pinch schedules to insure “on time” cutting harvest.
- Responsible for physical integrity of growing equipment and structures and have in proper working order.
- Supervise and instruct assigned hourly employee (usually 1-8 people) to daily tasks.
- Conduct field trials to improve on current practices.
- Frost Water and Weekend work will be required.

- Ensure all equipment is properly calibrated and routinely inspected.

Work conditions will be in an outside environment in a sandy soil setting. 80% will be field work with 20% office work. Outside environment will be in all types of weather situations, mostly warm and humid.

Position Leveling:

Level I:
- Acquires and applies job skills and company policy and procedures to complete both routine and a variety of tasks.
- Works on assignments that are routine to semi-routine in nature where ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice may be required.
- Normal receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments.
- Typically requires 2-3 years related experience. Prefer 5 years horticulture experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical training and certifications preferred
- AA degree preferred.

Level II:
- Applies job skills and company policies to complete a wide range of difficult to complex tasks in creative and effective ways.
- Works on assignments moderate to complex in nature where judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and making recommendations.
- Normally receives no instructions on routine work, general instructions on new assignments. May determine methods and procedures on new assignments and provide guidance to seasonal or non-exempt personnel.
- Typically requires a minimum of 3 – 6 years related experience.
- Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical training and certifications preferred.
- AA degree preferred.

Level III:
- Uses ability as a skilled specialist to contribute in development of concepts and techniques and to complete tasks in creative and effective ways.
- Works on assignments that are extremely complex in nature where independent action and a high degree of initiative are required in resolving problems and developing recommendations.
- Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may supervise the activities of other non-exempt personnel.
- Typically requires 6+ years of related experience.
- 1-2 years related supervisory experience.
- Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical training and certifications preferred.
- BS degree preferred.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Critical knowledge:
- B.S. degree in horticulture or other agriculture related discipline.
- 5 years growing experience beneficial.

Critical experience:
- Familiarity with IPM and WPS requirements.
- Spanish fluency desirable.
- Familiarity with Insecticides and Fungicides used in greenhouses

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities:
- Understanding of Vapor deficient concept and its use in mist and irrigation control.
- Working knowledge of WPS requirements and applications
- Knowledge of MS Office functions and use of spreadsheets. Basic computer skills.
- Obtain Florida pesticide license within 6 months of hire
- Soil fumigation techniques. Obtain applicator license for Midas within 3 months of hire.
- Cutting propagation experience desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Ability to walk in sandy soil. Work in outdoor environment in various weather situations including frost/freeze conditions.
Ability to carry 25 lbs for up to 15 minutes.
May be required to lift 70 lbs. occasionally. Must be able to wear respirator.
