We are once again approaching career fair season, and many of you may be questioning your commitment to attending career fairs as your budgets are under close review. The one thing to keep in mind is how quickly your absence will be noticed by students who are actively looking for internships and full-time careers. On-campus employer branding has been discussed in many of our weekly newsletter articles and cannot be emphasized enough. You must keep your name in front of students each year in order to build an effective campus recruiting program.
If you’re not able to attend career fairs, you may want to look for other ways to get your company name in front of students. Student groups on campus are becoming increasingly active in attending organizational regional and national meetings, trips abroad, and other extracurricular activities. These student groups are looking for corporate sponsors to help cover their costs, and in many cases, to offer some unique benefits for on-campus branding to those sponsors.
A few examples in which AgCareers.com has had the opportunity to be involved include; In 2008, the MANNRS (Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources in Related Sciences) Chapter at Iowa State University traveled to Costa Rica to attend a national conference. While at the conference they took part in a project to plant trees to help rebuild a devastated Rain Forrest. As a sponsor, AgCareers.com funded a portion of the trips travel costs as well as funded the planting of 10 trees. The students also visited college classrooms throughout Costa Rica where they handed out promotional materials such as ink pens, notepads, and informational pieces to students that were provided by sponsoring companies.
AgCareers.com has also sponsored Ag Fest week at Kansas State University. This event raises money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and involves students from the College of Agriculture in week long activities that culminates with a concert that is attended by hundreds of students and other campus community members. As part of the sponsorship, AgCareers.com’s logo was included on t-shirts, banners, and other advertisements used throughout the week, as well as promotional items passed out as attendees entered the concert venue.
New this year, AgCareers.com is sponsoring a portion of Fall Festival at Washington State University. Hosted by the College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Resource Sciences, this event showcases the College of Ag, Human and Natural Resources’ Sciences and their variety of degree programs that are available to all students, especially undecided freshmen. AgCareers.com sees this as a great opportunity to help grow the pipeline of available graduates and help them visualize career opportunities that they could prepare for, with a degree from the College of Ag.
All campuses have opportunities similar to these that provide big impact branding opportunities for companies. The best way to identify these opportunities are by communicating with your campus partners, even if you are unable to attend a campus career fair this fall, and let them know that you are looking for other creative ways to increase your on-campus brand.
In addition to activities like these, you will see AgCareers.com out and about this fall at a few campus career fairs. These events give us an opportunity to meet the bright up-and-coming talent as well as a chance to see our clients. As we have offered in past years, if you are an AgCareers.com Partnership client and you are unable to attend an event that you see we will be attending, we will be happy to promote your company and career opportunities from our booth. Please contact your account manager with information on the events of which you would like exposure and make arrangements to send in your company materials. Also, for all clients, be sure to update your job postings. Your AgCareers.com account manager can assist you with this.
