28 CREATIVE TITLES AREN’T ALWAYS BETTER TITLES Some companies excel at creating modern, attention-grabbing titles. Others prefer traditional and straightforward naming conventions. Neither approach tells you whether the job is rewarding, challenging, or valuable. In fact, we’ve had countless conversations with employers about how titles affect candidate interest and application rates. Sometimes a simple title performs better than a creative one because job seekers understand it more easily. Don’t let a flashy title—or a plain one—be the deciding factor. SIMILAR TITLES CAN MEAN VERY DIFFERENT THINGS A title can be surprisingly misleading when it comes to responsibility and authority. A “Manager” at one company may supervise a large team and budget, while a “Manager” at another company may have no direct reports at all. Likewise, a Coordinator, Specialist, Director, or Vice President can have dramatically different responsibilities depending on the organization. Always look beyond the title to understand the role’s actual scope. PAY DOESN’T FOLLOW TITLES AS CLOSELY AS YOU THINK One of the biggest misconceptions in the workplace is that the same title equals the same paycheck. A CEO of a small local business is not compensated the same as the CEO of a publicly traded billion-dollar company. Factors such as industry, company size, location, revenue, workforce size, and market demand all influence compensation. The title may be the same, but the role’s value in the marketplace can be vastly different. YOUR TITLE IS NOT YOUR IDENTITY This may be the most important lesson of all. Your title describes a role. It does not define your character, your potential, or your value as a person. You bring life, creativity, and impact to your work. You build relationships, solve problems, learn new skills, and contribute in ways that often extend far beyond a line on a business card. By all means, pursue your dream job. Just remember that it may be called something completely different from what you expected. Stay open to opportunities, read job descriptions carefully, and consider the benefits that don’t fit neatly into a title—things like experience, mentorship, visibility, connections, flexibility, and personal growth. After all, Doralee Rhodes may have carried the title of secretary, but anyone who watched 9 to 5 knows she was one of the smartest, most capable, and most indispensable people in the office. And that’s a title worth earning, no matter what the business card says. 2 3 4 5 PHOTO: tab62 – stock.adobe.com TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT’S OUT THERE.
